Ludlow is a mid-sized town in Hampden County, Massachusetts and part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Ludlow is located north of Springfield across the Chicopee River. The town is a suburb of Springfield with a population of 21,000.
Ludlow was originally a farming and mill town although it eventually became a streetcar suburb of Springfield with the extension of the trolley line across the bridge. Many homes for sale in Ludlow were constructed during the town's population boom in the 1950s. Since then, many subdivisions have been added. Ludlow today has an eclectic mix of homes that represent the city's long history. There are many small bungalows and country cottages in the town as well as sprawling Colonial mansions and secluded ranch homes. Ludlow is primarily a bedroom community comprised of mid-sized single-family homes under 2,000 square feet in size.
There are very few townhouses and condominium complexes in the town. There are some large historic homes and buildings that have been turned into multi-family houses and small condo buildings.
