Lowell is a large city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts with more than 109,000 residents. Lowell is the 4th largest city in Massachusetts behind Boston, Worcester, and Springfield and it's the second-largest city in the Boston metropolitan area.
Lowell has eight different neighborhoods. The Highlands is the most populous neighhood with 25% of the city's population. Located in the southwestern area of the city, it's distinguished into the Upper and Lower Highlands by residents. The Centralville neighborhood is located in the northeastern part of the city to the north of the Merrimack River.
Belvidere is the most residential neighborhood in the city to the south of the Merrimack River and it's an Historic District. The Back Central neighborhood is an urban area to the south of downtown. Other smaller neighborhoods in the area include Ayers City, Chapel Hill, Oaklands, Swede Village, and Wigginsville. Many of these small neighborhoods were in decline for decades although they have experienced a reemergence.
