Littleton is a smaller town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Originally settled in 1686, the town today has a population of almost 9,000. Littleton has remained a popular destination for military retirees for more than 50 years with its location between Hanscom Air Force Base and Fort Devens.
Most residential real estate development in Littleton occurred after World War II, when cottages were built around Long Lake, Spectacle Pond, and Mill Pond. Many of these homes were later torn down and replaced with Cape Cod homes and bungalows, which remain today. The 1950s and 1960s also saw a great deal of new home construction in many parts of town as larger Cape Cod homes and ranch-style homes were built. During the 1960s and 1970s, many stretches of road in Littleton were transformed with five-bedroom Colonial homes and some of the area's first split-level homes. In the following decade, many farms around Great Road and Hartwell Avenue were transformed into single-family homes, while the 1990s saw the horse farms of Littleton converted into residential properties.
